Results 2023 - East Division
Congratulations to the 940 students who participated in the East Division of the 2023 Simon Marais Mathematics Competition! We are very pleased that students from so many Universities performed well and are excited to report the results*. We will be sending additional information to all Local Coordinators shortly, so that students that did not place or win a cash prize can receive feedback on their performance. Meanwhile, our thanks to all Local Coordinators for their key contribution to the success of an event that crosses so many time zones.
Please keep in mind that seven of the eight problems were scored on a scale 0-7, while B4 was scored on a scale 0-14.

(See Rule 5.5 for the method of calculating University Scores: "A University score will be calculated for each University based on the performance of its participating students, as follows. The University score will be the maximum over all possible Eligible Groupings for that University. An Eligible Grouping consists of at most 3 individuals and at most 2 pairs, such that at most 4 of the students involved are of the same gender. An Eligible Grouping score is the sum of up to five scores: one for each individual and each pair in that Eligible Grouping.")
Australia-only prize-winners:
Best individual entry: A$1500
William Cheah (The University of Melbourne), 54
Best pairs entry: Total A$3000, A$750 per student
Noah Gorrell & Mykal Marsham (Australian National University), 46
Yasiru Jayasooriya & Haibing Wang (University of New South Wales), 46
Hofflin Prize (across two Divisions):
(Total A$3000, awarded for most creative solution to any problem in the Competition)
Jeff Li & Stanley Li (Australian National University), for their solution to A3. Their existence construction is simpler in that it uses an induction on only one base case (all other solutions, including the official one, needed at least two), and this construction also provides the interesting insight that for even n, the minimal case does not need to include a set of size 1.
Merit Prizes
(A$1000 for individuals and A$2000 for pairs outside the Top 10, subject to reduction if necessary to ensure that the amount does not exceed that of any Top 10 prizes in the same Division and category - awarded for creative or insightful work on any problem)
Ariana Goh Zhi Hui (National University of Singapore), for their solution to B3 - A$667.
Aaryan Dangi & Satyam Mishra (IIT Bombay), for their solution to B1 - A$714 each.
Rajarshi Ghosh & Ryan Hota (Chennai Mathematical Institute), for their solution to A1 - A$714 each.
IMC Prizes for Performance on the Hardest Problem
(A$1000 per person, shared in case of ties, awarded to entrants from Australia and New Zealand for highest scores on the hardest problem in the Competition, as determined by the average scores per problem. Ties broken if possible by scores on the other problems, in order of increasing average score.)
William Cheah (The University of Melbourne) - A$1000
Hadyn Tang (Australian National University) - A$1000
Preet Patel (Monash University) - A$1000
IMC Prizes for Female and Gender Diverse Entrants
(A$1500 per person, shared in case of ties, including between members of an eligible/non-eligible pair.
Awarded to Australian and New Zealand entrants - individuals and pairs - where the individual or a member of the pair identifies their gender as other than male; based on highest placings in either individual or pairs category, as determined by quantile ranking.)
Joseph Luo & Tsingying Xu (University of New South Wales), 42 - A$750 each
Chris Leak (University of Western Australia), 36 - A$1500
